Perspectives for Contemporary Music in the 21st Century
This volume, presenting Harvard University conference proceedings alongside essays from international scholars and artists, aims to investigate the present and future of new music. The essays therein contextualize pertinent questions about contemporary music in an interdisciplinary manner, presenting a variety of positions from the areas of composition, musicology, music technology, sociology, philosophy and art history.
The book goes beyond providing an analysis of current trends in new music and contemporary art. While social and institutional conditions for artistic production are analyzed, the multitude of possibilities for contemporary music are discussed from both theoretical as well as praxis-based viewpoints, thereby allowing for both timely and significant socio-critical discourse.
Der Sammelband ging aus einer Konferenz an der Harvard University zum Thema der Gegenwart und Zukunft der Neuen Musik hervor. Die hier vorgelegten Aufsätze kontextualisieren die Frage interdisziplinär und entfalten so eine Vielzahl an Positionen aus den Bereichen Komposition, Musikologie, Musiktechnologie, Soziologie, Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte.
Dabei geht es nicht nur um eine Bestandsaufnahme und Analyse gegenwärtiger Tendenzen der Neuen Musik und der zeitgenössischen Kunst im Allgemeinen. Vielmehr werden aus theoretischer wie auch individuellen künstlerischen Überlegungen heraus neben den sozialen und institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen die Möglichkeiten einer Gegenwartsmusik untersucht, die eine spezifische Form kunst- und gesellschaftskritischen Diskurses bildet.
