Darmstädter Beiträge zur Jazzforschung Vol. 12
Edited by Wolfram Knauer.

Jazz. Schule. Medien.

The latest book from the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt is entitled "Jazz. School. Media." and deals with various aspects of jazz education. The first block deals with the importance of jazz in school lessons, how it can be integrated into curricula, which pedagogical approaches can be combined with jazz-related topics, and what music teacher training must pay attention to in order to be able to use jazz and popular music in general education schools in a targeted manner. In a second block, the importance of jazz in the current media, i.e. in daily newspapers, blogs etc., will be discussed from different perspectives. Finally, jazz musicians themselves also have their say, reporting on strategies for reaching their audiences, for arousing curiosity about the spontaneous experimentation of musical improvisation in a time of short attention spans.
The contributions contained in this volume were written on the occasion of the 12th Darmstadt Jazz Forum in September 2011, which also featured a number of practical workshops and concerts alongside the theoretical discussion on jazz education. With this publication, we want to involve the reader in the discourse on how jazz can continue to reach a broad audience in the future without bending, without giving up its creative freedom.
The authors include renowned researchers, educators, journalists and musicians such as Christian Broecking, Sigi Busch, Ralf Dombrowski, Bernd Hoffmann, Julia Hülsmann, Reinhard Köchl, Hans-Jürgen Linke, Angelika Niescier, Florian Ross, Michael Rüsenberg, Jürgen Terhag, Walter Turkenburg, Joe Viera, Nils Wülker and others.
