Tempo is where composers, performers and scholars write about the music of our time—at length, with care and with the curiosity that has defined the journal for more than eight decades. Since January 2026 it has been published by Wolke Verlag in Berlin, an independent publisher of books on new music, jazz and improvisation.

Four issues, from January to December. In January 2026, Wolke Verlag took over Tempo from Cambridge University Press. Since then, the journal has opened up to a wider range of subjects and voices, works with writers from many countries and has a new look.
It still does what it has always done best: in-depth articles, interviews and composer portraits, and reviews of premieres, festivals, recordings and books from around the world.
Tempo was founded in 1939 as the house magazine of Boosey & Hawkes, conceived by Erwin Stein, a pupil of Schoenberg. Its editors have included Donald Mitchell, David Drew, Calum MacDonald and Bob Gilmore. From 2003 to 2025 it was published by Cambridge University Press.

In January 2026, Wolke Verlag acquired *Tempo* from Cambridge University Press. Since then, the magazine has broadened its scope to include more topics and voices, has been collaborating with authors from many countries, and has undergone a redesign.
She continues to do what she has always done best: writing in-depth essays, conducting interviews, and profiling composers, as well as reviewing world premieres, festivals, recordings, and books from around the world.
