An den Rändern des Maßes

Der Komponist Gerald Eckert

When we began planning this book, it was clear from the outset that it should not only present Gerald Eckert's compositional work, not only "his work" as music and scores. Rather, it would establish a network of connections to his life, to central philosophical questions of our time, to his immensely diverse artistic activities: as a composer, musician, electronic studio engineer, and ensemble director; as a scholar of science and literature; as a concert and festival organizer, painter, graphic artist, and teacher. But life is also reflected in thinking, in the way of arguing and questioning, in seeking and finding answers – in intellectual discourse. To make some of this readable, four extensive conversations with the composer form the framework of this book. The outlines of a richly relational way of thinking that are already apparent in these conversations are deepened and expanded by thematic spots, reports on his life and work, analyses and reflections on his works, as well as three major essays by the composer. With rare clarity, these provide insight into the structural, formative, and mathematical foundations of his complex compositional theory and deeply contemporary aesthetics and poetics.
