André Tchaikowsky. Die tägliche Mühe ein Mensch zu sein

Biografie und Tagebücher des jüdisch-polnischen Musikers und Komponisten

André Tchaikowsky (1935-82), a Jewish-Polish pianist, became known worldwide through his concert activities from the 1960s to the early 1980s. As a composer, however, he has remained virtually unknown until now. It is only today that his oeuvre is beginning to be received, including the Bregenz premiere of his opera The Merchant of Venice, a work that is not only musically magnificent, but also a delicate examination of the anti-Semitic tenor of Shakespeare's play.

The pianist stood in the composer's way all his life. Time and again, between concert tours, he sought the time to devote himself to his passion, composing. This is how his opera came into being over many years and in repeated attempts. The diaries printed here report on the daily adversities, the many things that stand in the way of creative work, the daily struggle as a concert pianist and, no less, his own feelings. They can be regarded as Tchaikovsky's autobiography. Written with immense linguistic and imaginative talent, they provide an insight into a life that is multifaceted in every respect, exciting and enjoyable to read.

The introductory biography by the English musicologist Anastasia Belina-Johnson describes the key dates of a life on the run (also from himself), from the boy from the ghetto in Warsaw to the self-imposed exile of his later years.
