Arnold Schönberg in der DDR

Immediately after the founding of the GDR in 1949, Arnold Schönberg's oeuvre was branded by party officials as a "late bourgeois phenomenon of decay". This categorization as a canon of "formalist" works had a lasting impact. It influenced discussions about Arnold Schönberg's significance for socialist musical culture and revealed the conflict between dogmatic ideas and demands and the interest and commitment of musicologists and composers. It was not until the centenary celebrations in 1974 that a new position was defined. From this point on, he was regarded as a "classic of modernism". This study deals with the discussions about Arnold Schönberg in the GDR, which were characterized by political, cultural-political and artistic-musical events and developments.
