Art-Interplay

Orientierung im Dazwischen

Since 2017, the Art-Interplay ensemble led by Jörg Hufschmidt has been exploring a space that defies fixed categories: the productive “in-between” of music, dance, drawing, and film. In performances featuring Ingo Reulecke, Ulrike Schoeller, Jörg Hufschmidt, and Joachim Zoepf, drum drawings meet experimental soundscapes, movement meets visual traces, and the camera meets sound—without a score, without hierarchy, without a predefined pattern. What emerges is a fragile force field of collective improvisation.

This book offers the first comprehensive analysis of the ensemble’s artistic practice. Contributions from the fields of philosophy, cognitive science, and music theory examine those moments in which control and letting go exist in a productive tension—an “oscillation of agency” that becomes the driving force behind aesthetic experience. At the same time, the authors document the specific working methods, approaches, and tools of a radically dialogical art form.

Art-Interplay sees itself as a democratic experiment: a model for communication that transcends disciplinary and hierarchical boundaries. Here, the “in-between” is not seen as a void, but as a dynamic space of resonance in which new forms of expression emerge.

A book for artists, theorists, and anyone who views improvisation not as an exception but as a form of insight.
