Artur Schnabel
Edited by Werner Grünzweig and Lynn Matheson.

Aus dir wird nie ein Pianist

English edition

The twelve lectures that Artur Schnabel gave at the University of Chicago in 1945 are generally regarded as his autobiography. The new edition of the book, which was first published in German in 1991, is a complete revision of the previously published text, with some considerable additions. The text was revised on the basis of the lecture manuscripts, which are now in the music archive of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.

Schnabel's "Autobiography" can still be read today as a key work in the history of music in the 20th century. Schnabel's dazzling intellect, his profound humor, his keen insights into music and musical life make his lectures seem as relevant today as they once were. More than almost any other musician, Schnabel reflected on the significance of music in modern society, and he clearly foresaw developments that are only now coming to full fruition.

Artur Schnabel, born in Vienna in 1882, lived in Berlin from 1898 to 1933. He emigrated to the USA via Italy in 1939. In addition to his legendary recordings of Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart and Brahms, Schnabel's oeuvre also includes many important compositions of his own and a series of lectures that have since been published.
