Berlin Sonic Places

A Brief Guide

Berlin Sonic Places: A Brief Guide is both a tribute to and an investigation of the sounds and soundscapes of Berlin in all their facets, from noise to silence. The book asks: Why does Berlin sound the way it does? And how does the sound of one neighborhood differ from the next? It focuses on the acoustic character of specific buildings, streets, squares, and green spaces, listens to the city's public transportation system, and recognizes the importance of nature for Berlin's acoustic environment.

In short, it attempts to find out what Berliners think and feel about the sounds of their city—and how Berlin's soundscape compares to other European capitals. Berlin Sonic Places: A Brief Guide asks the question, "How do we hear the cities we live in?" —and offers some thoughts and answers from a Berlin perspective, or rather, from Berliners' ears.
