Bernd Alois Zimmermann

Komponieren im Schnittpunkt der Medien

The papers collected here from the symposium, which took place at the Cologne University of Music and Dance in 2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s birth, demonstrate that his work has lost none of its relevance in an increasingly media-saturated world. The viability of the intra- and intermedia concepts that have shaped Zimmermann’s work from the outset becomes clear through examinations of his radio plays and film scores, as well as in analyses of his major works *Die Soldaten* and *Requiem für einen jungen Dichter*, whose musical organization, with its multimedia orientation, remains groundbreaking to this day. Furthermore, Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Composing also offers points of reference for more recent media-theoretical reflections, which are fruitfully explored in essays on Zimmermann’s concept of space or the “ghosts and spectres” of music history in his work.
Zimmermann’s composing at the intersection of media thus reveals itself in its own mediality, whose transparency—entirely in keeping with the pluralistic compositional method—opens up manifold vistas between eras and remains present in a comprehensive sense.
