Das transparente Licht

Younghi Pagh-Paans Kompositionen

Youngi Pagh-Paan was born in Cheongju, South Korea, in 1945 and moved to Germany in 1974, where she completed her studies in Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1994, she became the first woman in the German-speaking world to be appointed professor of composition in Bremen. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, including the Grand Art Prize Berlin in 2020. This book examines her first and second phases of work, the latter of which is considered a turning point in her career, from a musicological perspective. Particular attention is paid to compositional peculiarities, namely the significance of sound as "life" and, further, as "letting live," as well as characteristic timbres, in order to gain a deeper understanding of Younghi Pagh-Paan's multi-layered sound metaphors: "light in the depths and darkness."
