Die Filmmusik zu Sergej Ėjzenštejns „Ivan Groznyj“

When the patriotic mobilization and solidarity of Soviet Russia was a top priority at the beginning of the Second World War, political and artistic interests came together in the Ivan Groznyj film project. Iosif Stalin entrusted the realization of the ideologically calibrated commissioned work to one of the most talented directors of his time, Sergei Ėjzenštejn. Sergei Prokof'ev provided the perfect score for Ėjzenštejn's visual and dramaturgical design, making the film a masterpiece in musical terms as well. Barely registered by conscious perception, however, the music often conveys indirect messages that suggest an ideologically critical position. Although the film music for Ivan Groznyj has often received attention in musicological and film studies research, a synchronized score, without which a detailed examination of the film music was hardly possible, has been lacking until now. This work, on the other hand, is based on a new edition of the reconstructed and synchronized original score. Against the background of the complex historical, cultural-political and artistic context of its creation, the author conducts an audiovisual analysis of the complete film music. In doing so, she draws on archive materials, primary sources and extensive research literature to gain new insights into Ivan Groznyj's film music.
