Sven-Åke Johansson occupies a unique position between free music, classical swing jazz, experimentation, composition, music performance, musical stage play, language/speech/singing art and visual art.
This book is a comprehensive compilation not only of the compositions and the realized and unrealized concepts, but also of the explanatory drawings, sketches and varied texts by the Swedish musician, who was born in Mariestad in 1943. As the boundaries between the individual genres in his artistic practice are fluid, the focus on different types of text has been avoided. While Johansson's music is fanned out between acoustic readymades, bruitism, solo pieces, free formations, jazz combos and music theater, it is also difficult to ascribe a compartmentalized identity to the majority of his texts; thus, the texts that explain compositions and concepts are at the same time idiosyncratic linguistic-poetic formations. Poetry and aphorisms have developed into song texts, but also the other way round: vocal declamations that appear in instrumental instant composing find a fixed form as independent poetry. However, the lively mixture of different material that this book offers is not presented in a disorderly manner, but in thematic groupings. The book is an artist's book and a curated volume of material, a comprehensive documentation of Sven-Åke Johansson's compositions and musical concepts as well as the relevant texts. In addition, there are a series of interviews that not only reflect his idiosyncratic way of thinking and speaking, but also provide diverse explanations of the majority of the compositions and pieces contained in the book.
