Ein Konzert ist eine Feuerstelle

Exploring the "nature of being," immersing herself in the rituals of indigenous peoples, constantly pushing artistic boundaries. Composer Maria de Alvear is a highly unusual figure on the contemporary music scene. Her works are poetic explosions, some of which are reminiscent of magical and ritualistic acts. The publication "Ein Konzert ist eine Feuerstelle" (A Concert is a Fireplace) – marking her 60th birthday in 2020 – takes an in-depth look at her rich life and work: from personal reflections by her sister Ana de Alvear to musical analysis and a pointed focus on the existential and spiritual references and background of her work.

Maria de Alvear grew up in Madrid and continued her education in Germany. She received significant inspiration in Mauricio Kagel's composition class in Cologne. But Maria de Alvear struck out on her own path and embarked on a musical journey around the world that took her—both physically and virtually—to remote places and the innermost realms of thought. Her cultural roots, especially flamenco, and early influences from contemporary music inspired her development as a musician and composer. As a singer, she has often performed her own works. Her creative imagination is sparked by phenomena of human existence, natural processes, microcosm and macrocosm, indeed, life itself, to which she devotes herself with "true energy."
