Funktion und Farbe

Klang und Instrumentation in ausgewählten Kompositionen der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts: Lachenmann – Boulez – Ligeti – Grisey

This dissertation deals with the treatment of the sound dimension in several paradigmatic compositions from the second half of the last century: Tableau (H. Lachenmann), Notations I-IV (P. Boulez), Apparitions, Atmosphères, San Francisco Polyphony, Lontano, Piano Concerto, Violin Concerto (G. Ligeti), Quatre Chants pour franchir le seuil I (G. Grisey). The diversity of compositional approaches led to a specific focus in each case: principles of object formation (Lachenmann), analytical and new compositional instrumentation (Boulez), space and sound modulation (Ligeti), and the merging of quantitative and qualitative thinking about sound (Grisey).

Function and color: In earlier centuries, these two concepts did not have much to do with each other. A function was usually color-neutral and independent, while a color had no "real" function. The main focus of this work was to explore the dazzling, sometimes contradictory, and certainly complex interplay between these two poles in contemporary music.
