Gender and Identity in Jazz

The 14th Darmstadt Jazz Forum in October 2015 dealt with very different aspects of identity in jazz. It focused on the perception of female instrumentalists, on "masculine" or "feminine" sound, on homosexuality, physicality, and the denial of the erotic moment in music, on Jutta Hipp, Ivy Benson, Clare Fischer, Sun Ra, and others. The conference participants reflected on jazz history and looked confidently at the present. They discussed ways to overcome prejudices and how to appropriately describe the gender discourse of the 21st century in jazz. It is clear that the view of jazz is distorted when its protagonists are reduced to individual parts of their diverse identities. However, to completely ignore these in jazz history and the present day is just as great an omission. In this book, we therefore want to continue a discourse that remains important even in our already significantly changed world.
