Peter Brötzmann

Graphic Works 1959-2016

With contributions by Lasse Marhaug, John Corbett, Gérard Rouy, David Keenan, Karl Lippegaus, and Jost Gebers

Peter Brötzmann has always designed the covers for his recordings himself—and continues to do so today—occasionally also for fellow musicians, and in the past often also the posters for various FMP projects (such as the Free Music Workshop at the Academy of Arts or the Total Music Meeting in the Latin Quarter, later at Podewil).

When you look at his early posters and record covers, it's striking how distinctive and stylistically confident his graphic sense was right from the start. He had a background in both advertising and Fluxus art, and he built on that. Just as in his playing, he knew what he wanted to say in his graphic design. Music and visual design spring from the same source. And there is no doubt about who they come from: when you see a design by Peter, there is little doubt about who made it. His work has such a strong character that it is immediately noticeable when someone tries to copy his style (which many have done) – and inevitably fails. (Lasse Marhaug)

In his graphic work, Brötzmann has created a body of work that is in no way inferior to his musical and artistic oeuvre—a body of work that undermines the assumption that design is rigid per se. More than just decorative information, five decades of Brötzmann's design testify to a refined, grounded sensibility and an unwavering inner principle of order. His covers and posters are passionate and thoughtful, playful and brutal, minimalist and deeply human. (John Corbett)

This catalog, featuring around 260 works, is being published to accompany the exhibition at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam, in September 2016.
