Mauricio Kagel

Hochzeitstagebuch

Zeichnungen

In the summer of 2008, Mauricio Kagel created his "Wedding Diary" as a gift for his wife on her 80th birthday in December: 43 color drawings in a calendar diary with pre-printed dates in Spanish, each inserted on the right-hand side. Some were drawn directly onto the paper, while others were cut out from other sources and glued in. Kagel applied some of the drawings to the back of music paper, which shows through the drawings. The book was intended to be a surprise.

Those familiar with Kagel know his sense of humor. Few people knew that behind this great composer lay a no less talented and gifted artist. His drawings, whose confident and practiced lines are reminiscent of Cocteau, reveal an excellent caricaturist with a keen eye for human expression. These are unnamed portraits, many of them undoubtedly from his personal circle. Had Kagel not devoted himself to music, one might think, after viewing his drawings, that he could easily have pursued a second career in this field.

He could imagine this book "as a 'pocket book', a daily companion that fits in your jacket pocket, perfect for leafing through again and again"... The format is now slightly larger to accommodate the illustrations. But this does not prevent you from "leafing through it again and again" or smiling again and again...
