Höranalyse

Neue Werkzeuge der musikalischen Wahrnehmung

Musical listening analysis occupies a niche existence. Publications and current contributions to the discourse still suffer from an excessive focus on the score and its compositional method, which is a legacy of Adorno's ideal of listening "co-composition." To this day, the idea from early serialism that a work can be completely deciphered from its score continues to have an impact. These two myths are examined and debunked here. An alternative approach to analysis is developed, based solely on the perception of music. In the process, the analyzing subject is clarified, along with its possibilities and limitations.
In addition, the relationship between the subject and the piece is examined, with an answer to the question of how and where the analysis actually takes place between the two. Contemporary listening analysis also makes use of newly available presentation techniques: sound clips are embedded in a flowing text in the browser, and videos and illustrations help to improve understanding of the language. Under these conditions, new analytical tools are created and tested. These incorporate the possibilities of group intelligence, which can become an integral part of the discourse. The focus on perception has consequences for both the audience and the composers: influences and habits of listening are revealed and incorporated into the experience of pieces and recordings. This work attempts to take a big step toward establishing this underestimated activity of auditory perception.
