Isang Yun

Isang Yun. Leben und Werk im Bild 윤이상. 사진으로 보는 인생과 예술

The first illustrated monograph on the Korean-German composer Isang Yun, who was born in southern Korea in 1917 and died in Berlin in 1995. It was only in Germany, under the influence of the avant-garde of the time around 1960, that he found his own individual musical language. Shortly afterwards, Yun was drawn into the field of tension between political partisanship based on humanitarian, social motives and ideological incitement, between imprisonment, torture and reparation. He found a place of refuge in his compositional work. His music is based on the primacy of the melodic and the elongated sound that he found in the traditional music of his homeland and which he was able to reproduce and spatialize heterophonically. The result is works of unusual intensity and tonal richness.
