Isang Yun

Isang Yun. Leben und Werk im Bild 윤이상. 사진으로 보는 인생과 예술

The first illustrated monograph on the Korean-German composer Isang Yun, who was born in South Korea in 1917 and died in Berlin in 1995. It was not until he arrived in Germany, around 1960, that he developed his own unique musical language under the influence of the avant-garde of the time. Shortly thereafter, Yun was drawn into the conflict between political partisanship motivated by humanitarian and social concerns and ideological incitement, between imprisonment, torture, and reparations. He found refuge in his compositional work. His music is rooted in the primacy of melody and sustained tones, which he discovered in the traditional music of his homeland and which he knew how to multiply heterophonically and spatialize. The result is works of unusual intensity and richness of timbre.
