Kadenz und Gegenwart

Satztechnik und Zeitgestaltung in den Allemanden J.J. Frobergers

This volume is devoted to a novel, intensive, and historically grounded analysis of Froberger's music, using the example of the allemande, a genre central to his oeuvre. For it is precisely dance music that appears to be spiritualized in Froberger's work in a way that was previously unimagined. And so, the examination of his allemandes leads through the thicket of their elaborate compositional technique, via compositional questions of the shaping of time, to the deciphering of their existential dimension, the subjective experience of time and temporality. From the perspective of the experience of time, the phenomenon of "tonality" is illuminated in a new light and a bridge is built between the history of composition and the history of ideas, which makes Froberger's music appear contemporary in a double sense: for by "creating a present for itself," to use Hannah Arendt's words, it is both timeless and still relevant today.
