Klangperspektiven

Looking back at the music of the 20th century, several general themes emerge that have shaped this century, including the importance of sound and timbre for the composition, interpretation, and reception of new music, which became increasingly apparent over the course of the 20th century. This was evident in instrumental and vocal music, electroacoustic music, and in the fields of jazz and pop. The "perceptual turn" of the 1970s also contributed to an intensive examination of the perception of sounds. Today, musicology, cognitive psychology, and related disciplines can already look back on a large number of publications on this topic. This book is intended to serve as a stimulus on the path to a deeper understanding of sound phenomena. The title "Klangperspektiven" (Sound Perspectives) refers both to the structural diversity of the phenomenon of sound in the narrower sense—references to analytical methodology can be found in several contributions—and to a wealth of perspectives in the broader sense. Important concerns of this book are the examination of the topic of timbre from a pan-European perspective and the consideration of different scientific disciplines. The aim is to convey some aspects of the fascinating complexity of sound phenomena.
