Klangprojektion in die Zeit

Der Weg zum Orchesterwerk Staub von Helmut Lachenmann

"This dissertation represents a musical-scientific masterpiece par excellence. The presentation of the five basic strategies for sound projection into time can be regarded as a categorical theory of the phenomenon of 'music as a temporal art,' which is unparalleled not only in its reference to Lachenmann's music or to the music of the second half of the 20th century, but also in its validity for music in general. In addition, there are studies on the prehistory of the phenomenon and extremely readable 'musical reflections after 1950', which can claim the status of a music-philosophical text. Chapter 4 presents a precise analysis of Lachenmann's orchestral work Staub. After a presentation of the primary sources of the work that meets high philological standards, Mesquita expands his analytical criteria to include 'basic material,' 'numbers and form,' and 'symbolic and associative aspects.' This is followed by an in-depth analysis based on the five basic strategies for sound projection into time developed in Chapter 1."
