Komposition zwischen Musik und Theater

Das instrumentale Theater von Mauricio Kagel zwischen 1959 und 1965

Mauricio Kagel's instrumental theater is one of the most important phenomena in the field of New Music Theater and continues to shape it to this day. In the early years, between 1959 and 1965, Kagel investigated almost systematically and in ever new experimental arrangements how the relationships between the audible and the visible can become the subject of composition. The book provides a comprehensive account of this early instrumental theater: the phenomena are classified historically, with a particular emphasis on Kagel's aesthetic socialization in Buenos Aires in the 1940s and 1950s. The individual compositions are described and the basic motifs of an aesthetic of instrumental theater are developed. The question of how the analyses can take into account the fact that the visual dimension also has structural significance in Kagel's instrumental theater and that Kagel thus composes intermedially also plays a central role. Finally, for this book the author was able for the first time to include all the sketch material in the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel, which provides a completely new perspective on Kagel's compositional process.
