Komposition zwischen Musik und Theater

Das instrumentale Theater von Mauricio Kagel zwischen 1959 und 1965

Mauricio Kagel’s instrumental theater ranks among the most significant developments in the field of new music theater and continues to shape it to this day. In the early years, between 1959 and 1965, Kagel explored—in an almost systematic manner and through ever-changing experimental arrangements—how the relationships between the audible and the visible could become the subject of composition. This book provides a comprehensive account of this early instrumental theater: the phenomena are placed in their historical context, with particular emphasis on Kagel’s aesthetic socialization in Buenos Aires during the 1940s and 1950s. The individual compositions are described, and the fundamental motifs of an aesthetic of instrumental theater are developed. A central focus is also placed on the question of how the analyses can account for the fact that in Kagel’s instrumental theater the visual dimension also has structural significance and that Kagel thus composes in an intermedial manner. Finally, for this book the author was able to incorporate for the first time the entire collection of sketches held at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel, thereby providing a completely new perspective on Kagel’s compositional process.
