Kranichsteiner Gespenster / Specters of Kranichstein

Was war die Darmstädter Schule? / What was the Darmstadt School?

The Kranichstein Ghosts evoke what has been repressed in the history of the Darmstadt Summer Courses: the mind criticism. The Darmstadt School was not characterized by a specific compositional style such as serialism, but rather by its ruthless critique of any specific compositional style. For several years, Darmstadt was thus the site of musical self-criticism in production and reflection, theory and practice. It was on this brief historical opportunity for musical self-criticism that Theodor W. Adorno based his “Kranichstein Idea.” Since then, it has been repressed and forgotten, buried beneath the triumphant advance of the culture industry. The brochure sets out in search of what has been repressed and conjures up the ghostly voices of Adorno, Luigi Nono, Pierre Boulez, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, as well as the founder of the Summer Courses, Wolfgang Steinecke—representatives of the possibility of a Darmstadt School of Criticism.
