Kranichsteiner Gespenster / Specters of Kranichstein

Was war die Darmstädter Schule? / What was the Darmstadt School?

The Kranichstein Ghosts conjure up what has been repressed in the history of the Darmstadt Summer Course: the spirit of criticism. The Darmstadt School was not characterized by a particular style of composition such as serialism, but on the contrary by the ruthless criticism of any particular style of composition. For a few years, Darmstadt was thus the place of music's self-criticism in production and reflection, theory and practice. Theodor W. Adorno based his "Kranichstein idea" on this brief historical possibility of musical self-criticism. It has since been suppressed and forgotten and lies buried under the triumph of the culture industry. The brochure follows the traces of the repressed and conjures up the ghostly voices of Adorno, Luigi Nono, Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen as well as the founder of the Summer Course, Wolfgang Steinecke, representatives of the possibility of a Darmstadt School of Criticism.
