Ludwig Thuille und die Münchner Schule

Kompositionslehre in München am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und die "Harmonielehre"

This book sheds light on the teaching and practice of composition in Munich at the turn of the 20th century. A special focus is placed on a circle of composers also known as the "Munich School". The composer and music teacher Ludwig Thuille in particular is still regarded today as a central figure of the Munich circle, whose style can be described as post-romantic composing in the style of Wagner. The study explores the following questions: How was compositional technique taught there at the time and what music-theoretical premises were used as a basis? What was the relationship between teaching practice in Munich and the teaching of composition at other universities? To what extent can the theory of harmony, which Thuille published together with Rudolf Louis in 1907, be traced back to the Munich practice? In addition to Thuille's autograph notes, the study also examines teaching materials left behind by teachers and students from his immediate circle, such as Josef Pembaur the Younger, Josef Pembaur the Elder, Clemens von Franckenstein and Hermann Wolfgang von Waltershausen. On the basis of these observations, it is possible to more clearly outline and thus confirm the term "Munich School", which has come under criticism. Last but not least, the results of the study provide a basis for the historically informed and production-oriented analysis of post-Wagnerian music.
