Musik der Zeit 2: 1998–2021

Essays – Erinnerungen – Dokumentation

For 70 years, WDR has been indulging in the "luxury" of continuously commissioning new works and premiering them in meaningful dramaturgical contexts, thereby providing lasting support for contemporary music.   Following on from the publication Musik der Zeit 1951-2001, which appeared 20 years ago, we look back on the last two decades, browse through the programs, collect and remember, trace concepts and lines, devote ourselves to the orchestra and its transformation, reflect on the role of radio as a patron and driving force of modernity, take more than one look behind the scenes, and reveal the goals and difficulties, joys and hardships, risks and side effects of program design and production. In addition to essays and interviews, the inventory offers a wealth of oral history: lived history, memories of those involved, and short portraits of works that reflect very personal impressions and experiences and run chronologically throughout the volume. The texts are supplemented by a large number of illustrations and extensive documentation, including all programs since 1998 and an overview of the CD recordings made in connection with the concerts.
