Musik mit Musik

Texte 2005—2011

"Those who write for the violin are copying. To stand in Schönberg's tradition means to break with him. Composing means stealing an instrument. Originals can be copied, but originality cannot. Even the most unwieldy art will reach an audience of millions—but only over the course of millions of years. I have come to the realization that art is not something framed that can be viewed from the outside; rather, it forms situational condensations, selective exaggerations "in the world" that have ramifications in all directions. This means, for example, that art today, more than ever, lives in the diversification of media. In my case, music is the aesthetic center from which conceptual performances, documentary videos, and texts emerge. Following my 2009 book Programming Electronic Music in Puredata, published by Wolke-Verlag, which is purely technical in nature, this volume of writings now deals with expressive content and its contexts. Its central motif is an aesthetic of appropriating and transforming existing music; it is based on the innovations of the digital revolution. From the beginning, I have used the label "music with music" for this, which is why this book also bears this title. The 30 texts are arranged chronologically to show how opinions changed over time, how questions were approached more carefully or simplified again. The style of the texts varies depending on the topic and the original publication. The two essays Medien der Komposition (Media of Composition) and Zum 'Materialstand' der Gegenwartsmusik (On the 'Material Status' of Contemporary Music) can be regarded as the main texts.
