Barbara Heller

Perpetuum. Mein Leben durch Musik

Ein autobiografisches Werkbuch

In this book, Darmstadt-based composer Barbara Heller (born 1936) writes about her life as a musician and composer. After studying in Mannheim and Munich with Hans Vogt and Harald Genzmer, she initially worked as a piano teacher and freelance pianist, before turning her attention to composing, which fascinated her and gradually became the most important part of her life. At the same time, she is committed to raising awareness of female composers, for whom she has worked in the "International Working Group Women and Music" as well as a pianist and publisher. This richly illustrated, autobiographical workbook tells the story of the role that composing and music play in her own life, how the individual compositions came about, why she composes, how she found herself through music, and how she came into contact with many people. (Rainer Mohrs)

"These lyrics to my compositions are about how my life is fulfilled in a special way because I write music. About everything I experience just because I once composed something.
I believe that I compose in order to get close to people—on a level that is not possible in everyday life. Also to communicate something that is vital to me, but that I cannot put into words. My inner life should not remain unspoken, so I make music." (Barbara Heller)

"... a fabulous book. I think it turned out really beautifully, and in this relaxed form it gives a thorough impression of your lifestyle, your compositions, and your vast knowledge. It was also necessary to publish something like this, because you have been creating for decades and have had a wide reach with your music. Your good humor and your beaming face were an added bonus! I am very happy about it.
I am proud that I was allowed to write the short introduction. The photos also create a great liveliness. In short, the book is important..." (Eva Rieger)
