Perspectives on Sylvano Bussotti

Sylvano Bussotti's music seems to square the circle: Radical, avant-garde and innovative in many respects, it simultaneously unfolds an ideal of beauty that is strongly sensual and deeply personal, making it difficult to reconcile with the trends of the 20th century musical avant-garde.

This volume approaches the Italian composer's work from a multi-perspective and multi-layered viewpoint. It deals with cultural questions of identity and authorship, themes of gender and non-normative sexuality, historical and political contexts as well as aspects of notation and performance practice. Based on new archive material, precise score analyses and reconstructions of performances, the contributions provide insight into Bussotti's creative processes, his artistic collaborations and his aesthetics - and underline his significance for the discourses of musical modernism and postmodernism.
