Plötzlich Hip(p)

Das Leben der Jutta Hipp zwischen Jazz und Kunst

For decades, pianist Jutta Hipp was forgotten on the international jazz scene. Born and raised in Leipzig in 1925, she became a shooting star in post-war West Germany after successfully completing her art studies and was an exceptional figure in the male-dominated world of jazz. As "Europe's First Lady of Jazz," she made the leap across the pond. She conquered the New York jazz scene and played with the jazz greats of her time. Her big breakthrough came with her recordings for the renowned record label Blue Note Records as the first white and German jazz pianist among exclusively African American colleagues such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, and many others.
At the height of her success, she abruptly ended her career and traded her piano for a sewing machine. However, she did not return to Germany. Plötzlich Hip(p) is an unusual biography, an approach to the personality and versatile artist Jutta Hipp, embedded in the social and cultural-political events of her time.
