Ornella Volta

Satie/Cocteau

Eine Verständigung in Mißverständnissen

With previously unpublished letters and texts by Erik Satie, Jean Cocteau, Valentine Hugo, and Guillaume Apollinaire.
Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau seemed to have little in common that would have prompted an artistic collaboration when they met rather by chance one evening during the First World War. But this encounter led to the scandalous success of the ballet Parade in the 1920s and the founding of the "Groupe des Six," which attracted worldwide attention as the "French music of France." Both the poet and the composer left us with an image of themselves that was as exalted as it was distorted. Drawing on numerous previously unpublished documents and testimonies from renowned contemporaries (Apollinaire, Picasso, Valentine Hugo, Jacques Maritain), Ornella Volta attempts in this volume to reconstruct the historical facts and paints a picture of an artistic relationship marked by constant tension and misunderstanding, but also extremely fruitful and influential.
