Schlüsselwerke der Musik

Music from eight centuries, and yet more than just music history. This book seeks to uncover music in its secret innermost core: in the works themselves. Key works from the little-known period between the late Middle Ages and the Baroque, right up to works from the recent past. As the term suggests, key works have opened and triggered something, created a "canon," established a tradition, initiated a development, or marked a break. And key works have endured, even if some are only now coming to light again or were only known to specialists.
Three authors write about the greatest works and hidden gems. Each work is described in an understandable way on one page of the book, with reference to its characteristics and context. Each work can be read individually, but at the same time is intended to arouse curiosity about the harmony from which a unique musical world unfolds, telling its story in this way.
These "key works" are intended as a book for anyone who wants to discover, orient themselves, and gain an entertaining overview of the central works of European-influenced art music in history and the present. Thanks to the recent online availability of virtually all the works described here, this book can also be read while listening.
