What happens when rhythm is understood not as a sequence of discrete events, but as a continuous wave motion? With “Sinusoidal Run Rhythm,” Steffen Krebber develops a new mathematical model that fundamentally rethinks the concept of rhythm.

Starting from the summation of in-phase cosine functions, Krebber describes microtemporal and dynamic structures that bridge the gap between notation, interpretation, and sound. In doing so, the work combines mathematics, music theory, composition, computer music, and psychoacoustics into an interdisciplinary approach that does not replace existing models of rhythm, but rather expands and refines them.

The dissertation systematically introduces the theory of the sinusoidal run rhythm, situates it within the history of mathematical theories of rhythm, and, building on this foundation, develops further models such as Singular Transits and Sinusoidal Run Tempo. At the same time, it opens up new avenues for future research in computational research in electronic audio, as well as for new compositional and analytical applications.
