The Musical Legacy of Karlheinz Stockhausen

Looking Back and Forward

Karlheinz Stockhausen was one of the most influential and productive composers of the 20th century. His legacy extends far beyond his extensive musical oeuvre - as a pioneer of electronic music, as a musical thinker and theorist and as a teacher.

This volume sheds light on various aspects of Stockhausen's career, including his influence on the work of others as well as the formative impulses he himself received from close companions. Central theoretical principles of his work are re-read and critically examined in terms of their significance, impact and future potential. The compositions covered encompass the composer's entire oeuvre; several contributions are explicitly dedicated to the musical, conceptual and theatrical background of Stockhausen's opera cycle LICHT.

With an interdisciplinary approach and the inclusion of numerous recent studies - many of them available in English for the first time - this volume makes a significant contribution to Stockhausen research and opens up new perspectives on the understanding of his musical legacy.
