Richard Rhodes

The Teaching of Karl Ulrich Schnabel

Born in Berlin in 1909, Karl Ulrich Schnabel—son of pianist Artur Schnabel and singer Therese Behr—was an outstanding musician of his generation. He studied with his father and with Leonid Kreutzer at the Berlin Academy of Music and made his debut as a pianist in 1926. In addition to his successful international solo career, he also performed as a piano duo with his wife Helen and later with Canadian pianist Joan Rowland. After World War II, Karl Ulrich Schnabel became famous primarily for his international master classes. His students included Leon Fleisher, Claude Frank, Richard Goode, and Peter Serkin. He died in 2001. His estate is kept at the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

Richard Rhodes was born in Devonshire, England, in 1929 and studied history at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with honors. As a member of the English Bar, he worked in international law in South America, Paris, and Geneva, where he now lives. He wrote the satirical novel Gushing about his time as an oil manager in South America. He is married to Luba, the daughter of conductor Leopold Stokowski. Rhodes took lessons from Karl Ulrich Schnabel for more than 30 years. In his preliminary remarks, he writes: "As a musician, Karl Ulrich Schnabel possessed a sensitivity and understanding of great music that I have never experienced in any other person. That is why I decided to write this book."
