Das Mittelalter und die Musik der Gegenwart

In music, bridging the gap to medieval themes is currently very popular. Gregorian chants in the charts are just one variation among many. The exciting combination of the present and the Middle Ages, situated between identification and distancing, is also evident in numerous arrangements of medieval music by contemporary composers and ensembles.

The volume approaches these multifaceted phenomena of contemporary medieval reception from eleven perspectives, supplemented by Dieter Schnebel's new composition of Guillaume de Machaut's "Kyrie."

Guillaume de Machaut / Dieter Schnebel: Kyrie (commissioned composition)
Wolfgang Gratzer / Hartmut Möller: Ideas, paths, goals
Hartmut Möller: Medieval translations
Silvia Wälli: A saint on his way to the Middle Ages: Francis of Assisi
Annette Kreutziger-Herr: Postmodern Hildegard, or: How to listen to the "harp of God" in the 20th century
Robert Lug: Minnesang between market and museum
Olav Roßbach: Early music and neosacralization
Wolfgang Gratzer: Machaut, a contemporary?
Wolfgang Thein: Dieux gart qui bien chantera. On some references to the Ars subtilior in contemporary music
Wolfram Knauer: Medieval Blues. On projects combining jazz and medieval music
Martin Elste: The Middle Ages from the perspective of commercial marketing
Daniel Leech-Wilkinson: Translating medieval music
