VOCAL Adventures

Free Improvisation in Sound, Space, Spirit and Song

Vocal Adventures by the grand dame of vocal improvisation is finally here! Lauren Newton, one of the pioneers of the vocal avant-garde, shares her decades of experience with the voice as an instrument of expression and insight in this book. In a style that is as inviting as it is profound, she guides readers through breath awareness, multiphonics techniques, solo and collective improvisation, and the social and spiritual dimensions of a holistic artistic practice.

Whether as an introduction to deep listening, a handbook for vocal experiments, or a reflection on the imagination and diversity of free improvisation, Vocal Adventures offers valuable inspiration to musicians, performers, educators, and anyone interested in sound research.

Lauren Newton, born in Oregon, has lived in Stuttgart since 1974. As a soloist and in projects with Anthony Braxton, Phil Minton, Joëlle Léandre, Fritz Hauser, Ernst Jandl, and others, she has shaped the international scene between jazz, new music, and performance. Her discography includes over 85 releases; in 2020, she was awarded the Jazz Prize for her life's work by the state of Baden-Württemberg.
