"Long-suffering readers of music theory writings will know that lofty intentions often go hand in hand with poor eloquence. Harald Kaufmann is, for once, a theorist who reads well and formulates his ideas clearly. It is certainly not an easy read, but I can highly recommend this volume to all music lovers who want to combine reading with thinking. If only because of the three studies on Debussy, which are the cleverest things I have ever read about this composer."
