Werke in memoriam

Holocaust-Verarbeitung im Instrumentalwerk Mieczysław Weinbergs im Kontext der sowjetischen Musik

As a composer of Polish-Jewish origin, Mieczysław Weinberg was an outsider in the Soviet Union. This work examines how Weinberg carved out his own space for action and preserved his independence under the cultural and political circumstances of the time.

The focus is particularly on a series of works from Weinberg's later creative phase, which are dedicated to the memory of his family members – all of whom became victims of the Holocaust after the Nazi invasion of Poland. The processing of this trauma proves to be a driving force that can be traced throughout Mieczysław Weinberg's entire oeuvre.

Antonina Klokova reveals a dense network of intertextual references in Weinberg's work and beyond, from which his late instrumental compositions form a "cross-genre musical memory." Increasingly reclusive, Weinberg thus created a personal memorial to the traumatic 20th century.
