Zwischen Avantgarde und Kommerz

Die Kompositionen Ennio Morricones

Ennio Morricone (born November 10, 1928) is one of the most prolific and versatile composers of our time. In the course of his unprecedented career, Morricone has acquired a musical experience that encompasses all areas of 20th-century music, whether art music or entertainment music, with a breadth and diversity that can hardly be found in any other composer of the 20th century. His film scores have long since become part of the cultural canon: there is hardly anyone who does not know Morricone's sinister harmonica song of death or who has not at least encountered the cry of the coyote as a cell phone ringtone. Few people know, however, that Morricone was an active and long-standing member of the improvisation group Nuova Consonanza, founded by Franco Evangelisti, which sought to create new sounds, and that he wrote a large number of compositions for the concert hall that can be understood as an exploration of trends in contemporary music. In 2007, Morricone, who has received many honors, received the Honorary Award for his life's work in Los Angeles.

Here, then, is the monograph that comprehensively honors Morricone's compositional work for the first time.
