Studien zur Klaviermusik von Mauricio Kagel

Mauricio Kagel's piano music has so far been a little-researched area of his oeuvre. This dissertation is the first comprehensive analysis and presentation of this important body of work - from the recently rediscovered Cuatro piezas para piano (1945) to Impromptu II (1998). One focus here is on the detailed description of the development of the work from the sketch to the finished score, another on the exploration of the sources of inspiration of this contextually creative composer and his music theory accompanying the piano compositions.Initially appearing heterogeneous, Kagel's compositional aesthetic strategies can be concretized as a planned examination of transitions and rehearsal processes, which are associated with an increasing (re)materialization of musical ideas. His concept of "serial tonality" is aimed at a new tonality beyond traditional ties and obligations. The analysis of the deep structure of his piano music shows the close links between Kagel's formal thinking and the artistic thinking of Paul Klee and the aesthetic concepts of post-war modernism.
