Auf der Suche nach einem neuen Musiktheater

Politik und Ästhetik in Luigi Nonos musiktheatralen Arbeiten zwischen 1960 und 1975

The Italian composer Luigi Nono (1924-1990) occupies an extraordinary position in 20th century New Music with the combination of political commitment and aesthetic avant-garde in his music theater. Based on known and new archive documents, Nono's music theater is examined for the first time from a theater studies perspective on the basis of his performance practice. The different concepts with which Nono linked theater with music in his productions are analyzed. It also discusses how changes in the relationship between music and theater reflect the shifts in politics between 1960 and 1975, especially around 1968. In this way, a new approach to the theoretical understanding of performativity and representation is created, which points beyond Nono's music theater and contributes to the discussion of political theater and music theater productions. The book's various approaches provide a new perspective on the performance practice of Nono and his participants, on smaller and larger productions between Intolleranza 1960 and Al gran sole carico d'amore.
