Bettina Zimmermann

con tutta forza. Bernd Alois Zimmermann

Ein persönliches Portrait

Bettina Zimmermann titles the "personal biography" of her father Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918-1970), one of the most important composers of the 20th century, with a characteristic score playing instruction - "con tutta forza": with all your might - whose most important compositions - including the opera of the century Die Soldaten - also introduced a theory of artistic diversity and philosophical considerations into music history, which became concepts as "pluralism" and the metaphor of the "spherical shape of time".

The author, who was 18 when her father committed suicide, uses a wealth of previously unpublished documents - conversations with contemporaries, photos, letters and music scores - to create an unusual, detailed portrait in terms of form and content, in which we also get to know the ambitious photographer and draughtsman Zimmermann, the happy family man and the artist struggling with his subject matter, the communicator and the loner. These memories help us to better understand Zimmermann's self-characterization as an explosive "Rhenish mixture of monk and Dionysus" and his universal artistic thinking - and the intensity with which his suffering at the time (and in himself) was incorporated into his work.
