Sometimes a seemingly insignificant object is enough to change one’s perspective on an entire work of art. In *The Needle*, Patrick Becker takes a single scene from Ljubomir Pipkov’s opera *Jana’s Nine Brothers* (1937) as the starting point for an interpretation that is as detailed as it is unusual. A sewing needle, which at first seems to be little more than a prop, gradually emerges as the key to exploring questions of value, memory, folk music, myth, and violence.

Rather than offering a chronological analysis of the work, the book develops a network of motifs and constellations. The study explores how broader connections can be derived from musical, literary, and scenic details. To this end, the author develops the concepts of “negative alchemy” and “poetics of vertigo,” which are used to describe the symbolic and dramaturgical structures of the opera.

At the same time, the book introduces readers to a work that ranks among Bulgaria’s most significant operas, yet has never been studied outside the country. It is intended for readers interested in musical theater, musicology, cultural history, and Eastern Europe—and for anyone who would like to learn how a small observation can give rise to a comprehensive interpretation.
