Ein halbes Jahrhundert Musik

Der Briefwechsel Artur Schnabel und Therese Behr-Schnabel 1900-1951

The musical couple Therese Behr-Schnabel and Artur Schnabel wrote to each other for over half a century, from 1900 to 1951. She, a songstress from Mainz who had already made a name for herself around 1900, and he, a pianist from Vienna who was not yet in the public eye at the time. Like no other correspondence, it reflects the turbulent history of the first half of the last century with two world wars and an incomparable cultural upheaval, which meant the expulsion of so many musicians from Germany. Therese Behr-Schnabel is the one who reports on her living environment with a great deal of linguistic imagination and constant curiosity, while Artur Schnabel is the one who seeks to reflect on contemporary and cultural events in a more intellectually polished way. An exchange of letters could not have been better or more exciting. And like no other, it reveals how fragile our cultural foundations are and what great courage it takes to defend them against the spirit of intolerance.
