Luigi Nonos Wende

Zwischen Como una ola fuerza y luz und …..sofferte onde serene…

Luigi Nono's much-discussed turning point is generally dated to the string quartet Fragments – Silence, to Diotima from 1979. However, this work is nothing more than the most prominent example of an artistic redefinition that began much earlier: in 1974, after the completion of the opera Al gran sole carico d’amore, in the wake of political changes and personal tragedies. Paulo de Assis traces this period in detail and relates his findings to the two works that were composed before and after the opera: Como una ola de fuerza y luz (1971-72) for piano, soprano, tape, and orchestra, and …..sofferte onde serene… (1975-77) for piano and tape.

These works are traced in their compositional process based on the sketches, so that it becomes clear not only what Nono did, but also how he went about it. It becomes apparent that both works are paradigmatic in terms of aesthetics and technique, sound and structure, representing the politically inspired phase since 1960 on the one hand and the late style on the other, which became world-famous in the 1980s. Assi's study is a decisive contribution to understanding Nono's "turning point."
