Serendipity

Jürgen Wuchners Kompositionen

Jürgen Wuchner helped shape the Darmstadt jazz scene for more than four decades and was known beyond regional borders as the double bassist of numerous ensembles. His legacy includes not only the Jazz Conceptions he founded and his many recordings on LPs and CDs, but also his compositions, 75 of which are being published here for the first time.

His reputation as Darmstadt's Mingus reveals his approach to playing. He never saw himself as a sideman. His music was always powerful and nuanced, interwoven with influences from a wide variety of styles. Thirteen companions from different generations recount this. From a very personal perspective, they describe Jürgen's attitude and approach to his compositions in dialogue with his bandmates, as well as his general attitude toward music and life: it is possible to live independently and engage in genuine dialogue within a team of musicians and still be successful.

The title of the album—Serendipity—outlines his open-minded approach to music: embracing surprising discoveries made through curiosity and chance, and developing them further.
