Sound Studies and Sonic Arts Reader

Sound Studies and Sonic Arts is a postgraduate program at Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2017, the program has served to deepen theoretical and practical skills in the field of sound research and practice—particularly in cultural studies theory, musicology, aesthetics, sound art, sound design, and media production. It emerged from the Sound Studies – Acoustic Communication program, which was founded in 2005.

While the Master's program in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts combines theoretical discussions with practical research and design in auditory culture and sound art, this publication focuses on research work by theory lecturers in the program during the 2020/21 academic year. Their contributions offer a variety of perspectives and methodologies in the field of sound studies and sound theory.

The program's theory department brings together teachers with backgrounds and research interests in musicology, media studies, philosophy, acoustics, and artistic research. We asked our colleagues to suggest essays that reflect these interests, including original contributions and texts that have not yet been published in English. With this publication, we aim to highlight the diversity of approaches in the field of sound studies and, at the same time, document the understanding of sound theory in the master's program.
