Vom Singen und Spielen zur Analyse und Reflexion

Eine Dokumentation anläßlich der 50. Arbeitstagung des Instituts für Neue Musik und Musikerziehung

Drawing on archival materials, original correspondence, contemporary press reports, and commentary, this volume documents the development of the Darmstadt Institute for New Music and Music Education from its founding in 1947 through 1995, tracing a path from the original aspirations of Fritz Jöde’s circle to revive the youth music movement in postwar Germany, through the controversy between Theodor W. Adorno and Erich Doflein regarding the positioning of music education in the 1950s, the “musicological infiltration” pursued by Rudolph Stephan in the 1960s, and the defensive struggles against the demands for politicization by the 1968 generation, all the way to the pluralistic coexistence and mutual enrichment of avant-garde, jazz, and freely improvised music. In the most concise of spaces, this stimulating “picture book” brings half a century of musical contemporary history to life more vividly than many a thick tome.
