Vom Singen und Spielen zur Analyse und Reflexion

Eine Dokumentation anläßlich der 50. Arbeitstagung des Instituts für Neue Musik und Musikerziehung

Using archive documents, original correspondence, contemporary press reports and commentaries, this volume documents the development of the Darmstadt Institute for New Music and Music Education from its foundation in 1947 to 1995, covering the original endeavors of the circle around Fritz Jöde to restitute the youth music movement in post-war Germany, the controversy between Theodor W. Adorno and Erich Doflein about the positioning of music education in the 1950s, the 'musicological infiltration' pursued by Rudolph Stephan in the 1960s and the defensive struggles against the politicization claims of the 1960s to the pluralistic coexistence and mutual fertilization of avant-garde, jazz and freely improvised music. This stimulating 'picture book' brings half a century of contemporary musical history to life more vividly than many a thick tome.
